For each period that the youth minister is elected, she or he will be allocated a portfolio for which he or she will be responsible. This will be the duties that are linked to that of the actual minister in parliament. At the end of the term, each youth minister will be assessed on these criteria to determine the most outstanding youth minister of that term.

Youth Minister of Finance
Youth Ministers of Finance will assist in these areas:
- Raise funds for their schools, Youth Ministers special projects and other fundraising activities
that might arise.
- Be the treasurer for the Youth Ministers
funds in their schools.
- Work alongside the schools board and treasury team on their schools budget.
- Give tips for Trevor Manuel’s budget speech.
- Attend the 2005 Budget address in Parliament.

Youth Minister of Foreign Affairs
Youth Ministers of Foreign Affairs will be the PR officer and face of the YM. They will also be the liaison officers between, Teachers, Ministers and SAYMP. They will be the face of their school to other schools and communities. |

Youth Minister of Health
Duties of the Youth Ministers of Health are as follows:
- They will drive Health Awareness campaigns in schools once a month with different subjects.
- Youth Ministers of Health will work closely with YMs of ET, WF and SR.
- HIV/Aids will be the main Health Awareness drive.
- They will look at healthy life styles, eating habits and the importance of sport and training.

Youth Ministers of Justice and
Constitutional Development.
The Minister of Justice will work closely with YMs of Safety and Security and Education. They will take all complaints from the ministers and other learners in their schools concerning bullying and other criminal behaviour on the school premises. Justice Minister with Safety and Security reporting to Minister of Education will ensure that the democratic rights and safety of all learners in their schools are upheld and protected in line with our constitutional rights. A box will be placed in the school to take complaints from learners that are having problems in the school and choose not to be identified, problems with fellow learners, problems at home, or with teachers. The Minister of Justice will forward the complaints to the necessary teachers or authorities for investigation. |

Youth Minister Public Service
and Administration
This Minister will forward all the report documents from the different portfolios to the National Department of Public Service and Administration. The YM of PSA will drive the DPSA program in their schools and communities with the help of YM of FA. The YM of PSA will be fully responsible for the report material getting to the department of PSA in Pretoria. |

Youth Minister of Sport and Recreation.
Youth Ministers of Sport and Recreation will work closely with the YM of Arts and Culture and Health. YM of Sports and Recreations primary task will be as follows:
- Arrange sporting events with other Schools, e.g. Soccer, Volley Ball, Rugby, Cricket etc.
- Use sport as a tool to bring youth together especially from different races and schools.
- Organize exciting field trips and “get-away’s” for YM at least 3 times in the year.

Youth Minster of Safety and Security
The YM of Safety and Security will work closely with the YM of Justice. Below are the duties of the YM of
Safety and Security:
- They will ensure that the school is off limits to thugs.
- Report all learners involved in vandalism to school property as well as other learners belongings.
- They will work closely with Adopt a Cop program and facilitate S/S awareness programs at their schools.

Youth Minister of Education
Youth Ministers of Education will work closely with the school governing structures, the School Governing Body, Principals, Teachers and the LRC. They will also work closely with the YM of Foreign Affairs and will liaise between teachers and Youth Ministers. Youth Ministers of Education will also attend governing body meetings and teacher meetings (where it is allowed)
as representing the youth minister. |

Youth Ministers of Trade and Industry
Youth minister of Trade and Industry will promote entrepreneurs programs in their schools. They will work closely with YM of Finance on fundraising. They need to organize at least 4 major fundraising activities at the school. Proceeds from the fundraising can be used for the school, activities of Youth Ministers of that particular school or donated to an organization or school of their choice. |

Youth Minister of Transport
The YM of Transport will arrange all transport for YM for his/her school for events and workshops to be held in the year. It will be the task of the YM of Transport to make arrangements prior to the event at hand for transport for the YMs. At least twice in the year, the YM of Transport should run workshops in his or her school concerning road safety and pedestrian safety. All the information can be obtained from the internet or from Arrive Alive Campaign. |

Youth Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry
The Youth Minister of Water Affairs & Forestry will be encouraged to participate in the South African Youth Water Prize Competition (SAYWP). The SAYWP encourages learners to identify water & sanitation related problems in their school and communities. Research on the identified problem and recommend solutions. It also enhances the interest of youth in science & technology as well as water resource management careers. The national winner participates in the international junior water prize held annually in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) creates a platform for the Provincial Youth Ministers of Water Affairs and Forestry to interact with the Minister to present their reports and recommendations, and be invited by the DWAF in parliament during the budget vote.
The DWAF consider the youth ministers for the internship programmes and bursaries that they offer. |

Youth Minister of Agriculture
Youth Ministers of Agriculture will start vegetable gardening in their schools and communities. They will also assist disadvantaged communities’ mostly informal settlements as well as schools where the vegetables are needed. They will also link up with the Department of Agriculture programs, still to be identified. |

Youth Ministers of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
Youth Ministers in this portfolio will run programs in their schools and communities in these areas:
- Environmental Awareness campaigns in
schools and communities.
- Environmental service days once a month in schools and communities.
- Once a month the YM of EFT will deliver a short 10 to 15 minutes presentation about one South African tourist destination to promote SA tourism. One presentation for the learners of their school and one at a SGB or at a PTA meeting. This can be done through help by the YM of Arts and Culture.

Youth Minister of Arts and Culture
This is an exciting portfolio. The learner in this portfolio will be responsible for 2 key functions in his school and community.
- To address key issues in their schools and communities around HIV Awareness, Violence against Women and Children, and any other problems relating to youth. This can be done through Art, Drama, Dance or Music.
- Through our recent transition as a country we as South Africans need to learn more about each other’s cultures and backgrounds. This can be done through cultural days and events organized throughout the year by the YM of A/C. These cultural days will culminate in Heritage Day.
